Life is Just Right

Life is Just Right

I heard it when I crossed the finish line and won my first cross country race. I heard it when I finished my first semester of college. I heard it multiple times on my wedding day and I’m sure you all have heard someone you know say some variation of this phrase “enjoy this because life is short”. This phrase has always sat a little funny with me. It reminds me of the famous glass half empty or half full analogy (which I dislike in a lot of ways haha). What if the glass is just right!?

I don’t like to think of life as short or long. I like to think of it as just the right amount. I believe that I’ve got enough time to do whatever I can dream of. But that’s the thing- it has to be a dream! We shouldn’t spend time chasing things we don’t love or care about and instead see life as an opportunity to live out our happiest realities and a chance to fulfill our wildest dreams. I know that might be a little cliché but if you don’t set your standards high and make challenges for yourself then you aren’t going to get as far as you could otherwise.

I didn’t used to have that perspective though. I used to be in the mindset of, “I don’t have enough time to fit in everything I want!” But after a while of that, I realized that that’s all I had focused on was the “why I can’t”. I really didn’t understand what I wanted because I hadn’t taken time to set goals that aligned with who I was and who I wanted to be. I decided to turn it around and think of the time I had as an opportunity to do anything and everything I wanted and set goals that helped me to achieve my aspirations.

There is always going to be some rationalization that you tell yourself that you “can do it next year” or when you “have more free time”. But if you set goals that have no specific end date then they aren’t going to get done. Even starting by setting small goals will help goal-setting in becoming a habit and will help you achieve the most amount of things in the time that you are given. Sometimes our goals will be more measurable than others, but they should always have a purpose and a means attached. I like to think of my smaller goals like meditating 2 times a week, practicing yoga everyday and writing a blog post every week to be small goals that I hold myself accountable for. They are building blocks that help me to achieve bigger goals that are more long term.

My dad has ALWAYS told me “don’t tell me how you can’t, tell me how you can.” I firmly believe in if there is a will there is a way, and that’s what I try to live by in my everyday life. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to what I want to accomplish in my life. I know that if I keep telling myself I can’t then I’m not going to. Plain and simple.

You have to make the time. You need to put in the effort. You deserve to set goals and reach them and even go beyond what you thought was first possible. Don’t cut yourself short or take the easy route, take the long way, enjoy the scenery and let any obstacles you face or encounter make you stronger. Chase your dreams and remember that life is just the right amount of time to chase what you love- so find what that is and do it!

There are ALWAYS going to be reasons you can’t but make a goal to come up with ways you CAN.
